You know how sometimes you come across a snack and you take a little to start with? Then you go back for more. And then you find it SO addicting that you go back for thirds and just pile your plate full? That is the situation with this 3-Ingredient potato chip dip recipe.

When I was growing up, grabbing a bag of potato chips and a tub of this great dip from one of our local Lawson’s stores was a special treat on the weekends. The Lawson stores are long gone and although I’ve heard that you can still get the original recipe in some Circle K stores, I’ve been making this crowd pleaser at home for years. (Even my friends who didn’t grow up in northeast Ohio and have never heard of Lawson’s convenience stores think this is better than the more popular French onion dip they’re used to.)

Not only is Lawsons chip dip recipe super easy to make, but it also does double duty as a delicious veggie dip, too. It’s a huge favorite at gatherings as well as a snack during family movie night at my house. Since it’s made with easy-to-find ingredients, it’s my “go-to” homemade chip dip when I need a quick appetizer. (And by quick I mean a total time of like 3 active minutes mixing a few basic ingredients together!)

A Quick of Lawson’s Convenience Stores

In 1939, dairy owner J.J. Lawson started a store at his dairy farm in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio to sell his dairy products. It grew to be a chain of stores, mostly in Ohio and neighboring states, that sole basic staples like bread, milk, orange juice, and a particular chip dip recipe that developed a loyal fan base.

Lawson’s was bought by Consolidated Foods in 1959. Consolidated Foods was renamed Sara Lee in 1985 and, around that time, Lawson’s stores in the United States were sold to Dairy Mart. In 2002, a Canadian company bought Dairy Mart and most of the stores were converted to Circle K gas stations and convenience stores.

What You Will Need to Make Copycat Lawson’s Chip Dip Recipe

  • 8-ounce container of Chive and Onion Cream Cheese
  • 1 cup Sour Cream
  • 1 TBSP dry ranch dressing mix

How to Make This Quick Cold Dip (AKA Best Chip Dip Ever!)

First, take the cream cheese out of the refrigerator about 20 minutes before you’re ready to make the dip, to let it soften a bit. (So much easier to stir this way….)

Next, place the onion and chive cream cheese, sour cream, and dry ranch dressing mix into a bowl. Use a hand mixer to blend the ingredients together until well mixed and creamy.

You can grab a bag of chips and dig into this popular lawson’s dip recipe right away if you’d like, but the ranch and onion flavor will be more prominent if you let the flavors meld for a while.

Store any leftovers in a sealed container in your fridge for up to a week.
