I recently needed to send a dessert to a cookout filled with guys grilling fish and hanging around a campfire. I couldn’t think of a better choice than this moist banana bread full of bourbon flavor. It’s a fun, boozy take on a classic recipe that’s full of knock-out flavor.
What You’ll Need to Make Bourbon Banana Bread
For the Quick Bread
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 3 to 4 large overripe bananas
- 1 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 cup butter (one stick), melted
- 2 Tablespoons bourbon
- 1/2 cup pecans, chopped
Variation: Add one cup of chocolate chips or chocolate chunks to the finished batter to make chocolate bourbon banana bread.
For the Icing

- 2 Tablespoons sour cream
- 1.5 teaspoons bourbon
This is one of my go-to icing recipes, I just swapped out the vanilla extract for bourbon!
How to Make Bourbon Banana Bread
Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and spraying the inside of a 9×5 inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt.
In a separate, medium-sized bowl, combine the eggs, bananas, brown sugar, butter, and bourbon. Tip: Use a potato masher to mash bananas and then a wooden spoon to mix all of the ingredients together.
Add the wet ingredients to the bowl with the flour mixture and beat over medium speed using an electric mixer until the dry ingredients are just incorporated into the batter. (The batter will be thick and lumpy.)
Gently stir in the pecans on low speed.
Transfer the batter to your prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly in the pan.
Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick stuck into the banana loaf comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before drizzling with the sour cream bourbon icing.
Bourbon Glaze Directions
In a small bowl, mix together the powdered sugar, sour cream, and bourbon. If the icing is too thick, stir in milk (or extra bourbon!) one teaspoon at a time.
Cut into slices and serve! If you want to get extra fancy, you can melt butter in a small skillet and make caramelized bananas to serve as a topping to the bread slices.
