While most people think of warm apple crisp as a classic fall dessert, I think this old fashioned apple recipe is welcome any time of year! Made with just a few simple ingredients, it is the perfect ending to dinner parties or a family meal.

This delicious recipe combines tender, juicy apples with a cinnamon-laced crunchy topping. Because the lemon juice keeps the apples from turning brown, you can easily make the crisp ahead of time and put the prepared baking dish in the oven when you’re about an hour away from wanting dessert. This recipe is my favorite way to make an apple pie like dessert without having to make a pie crust (a skill I’ve yet to master!).

How to Make This Amazing Apple Dessert

Step One

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Farenheight and lightly grease a 9×13 baking pan.

Step Two

Place the apple slices in your baking dish and sprinkle with the lemon juice, sugar, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Use your clean hands to mix everything together and then spread the sliced apples out so they cover the bottom of the pan.

Cut the butter into small pieces and arrange over the top of the apple filling.

Step Three

To make the apple crumble topping, combine the flour, sugar, and cinnamon in a medium-sized bowl.

Add the softened butter to the bowl and, using a pastry blender or fork, cut it into the dry mixture until it forms crumbles.

Cover the apple filling with the crumbly topping mixture.

Bake for 45 minutes or until your crust is a nice golden brown and you’ve got a tender apple filling.

What Type of Apples Can I use to Make an Apple Crisp?

I know that I’ve seen articles on the “apple varieties” that are best for baking and honestly, I have no recollection of any of their recommendations. When I make this recipe, I always use whatever type of apples I have on hand. The recipe always turns out amazing and I never have any complaints, so I think that it’s totally fine to bake with whatever type of apple you keep on hand for your family to snack on.

As a reference, I’ve made this recipe with the following types of apples and it’s always fantastic:

  • Granny Smith Apples
  • Honeycrisp Apples
  • Golden Delicious Apples
  • Pink Lady Apples
  • Whatever variety we managed to bring home from our local apple orchard during apple season!

I say don’t stress about the type of apple – sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter make them all taste awesome.
