Super Easy Homemade Balsamic Reduction Recipe (Balsamic Vinegar Glaze)

Balsamic glaze over vegetables

This easy recipe for homemade Balsamic Glaze is made with just one or two simple ingredients! This delicious condiment makes a flavorful topping for all of your favorite foods!

While you can easily find a bottle of balsamic graze at your local grocery store, this simple recipe is so easy to make that there’s no need to panic if you don’t have a jar in your refrigerator.

(I currently have a bottle of Trader Giottos’ Glaze from Trader Joe’s in my kitchen and, when it comes to consistency, I can’t tell a difference between Trader Joe’s brand and this recipe.)

All you need is about 15 minutes and a cup of balsamic vinegar to whip up a batch of this tangy condiment.

What You’ll Need To Make Balsamic Glaze Recipe

  • 1 cup of good quality balsamic vinegar

Additional Recipe Options:

  • Add 1 or 2 teaspoons of honey if you’d like to sweeten the glaze
  • Or, you can add a little brown sugar to the balsamic vinegar of modena to bring out its sweet flavors
  • If you have a collection of flavored balsamic vinegars, you can also try use them in this recipe (pomegranate is one of my favorites!) in place of traditional balsamic vinegar
  • If you’d like to make a large batch of this sauce recipe, simply increase the amount of vinegar used

How To Make Homemade BalsamicGlaze Recipe

  • Pour the balsamic vinegar (and honey, if using) into a small saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Turn the heat down to low heat and simmer for about 12-15 minutes, until the sauce thickens and is reduced by about half.  When it starts to stick to the back of a spoon, you’ve reached perfection!

How to Store Your Homemade Balsamic Glaze

Your homemade glaze can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

You can store it in an airtight container such as a:

  • Squeeze bottle with lid

What is the difference between Balsamic Glaze and Balsamic Reduction?

The short answer is “nothing”.

Whether it’s called a balsamic glaze or a balsamic reduction, the product is generally just a reduction of balsamic vinegar. It has a syrupy consistency and a tangy flavor. You can it interchangeably in any recipe that calls for a balsamic glaze or reduction.

How Can I Use This Homemade Balsamic Glaze Recipe?

In addition to adding flavor to your favorite dishes, a drizzle of this tangy balsamic glaze makes all of your dishes look prettier! It’s one of my favorite condiments to use and is a perfect addition to any of the following foods:

  • In a Caprese salad (or any favorite salad, for that matter!)
  • Over roasted brussels sprouts
  • Spooned over vanilla ice cream or grilled fresh fruit
  • Drizzled over fresh strawberries
  • On grilled chicken, fish, beef, or pork chops
  • In a salad dressing recipe
  • As a decorative touch on a cheese board
  • Drizzled on a pizza
