Hygge has been a way of life for people in Denmark for as long as they can remember and, over the last few years, the Hygge movement has slowly made its way into American culture.

Although the term Hygge itself may be relatively new to some people, the concept is familiar and has long been embraced by those seeking a calm and cozy life.

The meaning of Hygge can be summed up as that feeling of being completely comfortable and cozy in your surroundings.  It’s that amazing feeling you get when you light your favorite candle and take a bubble bath after a long day.  Or when you curl up with your favorite book, a cozy blanket, and a warm cup of coffee, a steaming mug of tea, or a generous pour of red wine.

This feeling is the Hygge vibe, and it’s become increasingly popular because it feels good to the soul and is actually pretty easy to achieve.  A great place to start is by creating this Hygge vibe in your home.

How to Start Creating a Cozy Home – The Hygge Corner

If you’d like to begin playing around with Hygge elements and making your home cozier, you can begin by creating a simple Hygge corner in your house.

The ideal spot for a Hygge corner is a comfortable seat by a window.  Hygge decor incorporates outdoor elements combined with the feeling of being secure and well cared for inside your home, so being able to see the outside is perfect. But, if you don’t have that option in your home, you can still make it work; just pick a spot, add a cozy chair and a small side table.

Here are a few more items you can add to your Hygge Corner to make it even more comfortable and inviting:

  • Warm blankets
  • Plush throw pillows
  • Candles or fairy lights
  • Books
  • Wooden or stone drink coasters

How to Create a Hygge Vibe with Cozy Blankets and Throws

Cozy living spaces are all about having comfy pillows and blankets that are easily accessible.  So, make sure to keep your favorite pillows and blankets in spots that you can not only visually enjoy but quickly access.

  • Drape them over the arms of your chairs and sofas
  • A blanket ladder is also a terrific place to display your textiles. Not only do ladders help display and organize your blankets and throws, but they become their own piece of art on your wall and really help bring out a comforting feeling in the room.
  • Don’t forget to mix up textures and patterns when it comes to blankets! They don’t all have to be soft and fluffy. Wool, crochet, and chunky knitted textures are warm and add an exciting aesthetic.

Use Pillows to Create a Hygge Feeling

  • As with blankets and throws, make your pillows available by displaying them in places where they are seen and easily used.
  • Different shapes and textures are welcome for pillows as well and will add to your Hygge living space.
  • Think beyond just throw pillows – poofs, floor pillows, and even french mattresses or faux fur bean bags are perfect for curling up on for a movie night or just to veg out with a book.

Hygge Sounds to Help You Relax at Home

Hygge is something that can be felt by all of your senses, not just sight and touch. This means that sound is also super important when you’re trying to create a Hygge inspired home you can relax and unwind in.

Sounds are always surrounding us, to the point that we’ve adapted to be able to block many of them out.  These sounds can have a physiological effect on us – from affecting our heart rate, our breathing, and even our hormone secretions (yikes!).

Because sounds can play such a big part in how we feel, it makes sense to surround ourselves with sounds that promote relaxation and calmness.

Studies suggest that most of the sounds humans find most relaxing are those found in nature.  Fortunately, we can invest in inexpensive sound machines or apps on our phone to mimic these sounds while we’re indoors.  Some of the most popular and relaxing sounds of nature are:

  • Ocean waves
  • Raindrops
  • Babbling brooks
  • Thunderstorms

Have these sounds playing in the background while you’re reading, playing games with your family, or trying to fall asleep.

Hygge Scents to Create a Calm Home

Essential oils are a natural and easy way to create a calming effect in your home.  Numerous studies have shown that aromatherapy helps relieve stress and help you get a good night’s sleep.

Some of the most popular essential oils that are used for instilling calm are:

  • Lavender
  • Peppermint
  • Cinnamon
  • Camomille
  • Cedarwood

There are a ton of diffusers on the market, ranging from very basic to totally gorgeous. Just add a few drops of essential oils to the water in your diffuser, and you’re on your way to making your house smell amazing.

Warm Up Your Home With Hygge Lighting

Soft, natural lighting is essential for creating a Hygge vibe. Warm, intimate lighting that gives off a glow of coziness can be achieved by:

  • Building a fire in your fireplace
  • Installing an electric fireplace, if your home does not already have a traditional working fireplace
  • Placing candles around a room (real or battery operated)
  • Using soft, warm bulbs in your light fixtures
  • Using lamps and accent lights instead of overhead lighting
  • Placing fairy lights or other small bulb light strings on your mantle or in clear glass jars as decor
