Crawling into a resort or Airbnb bed is always a treat. Surrounded by vacay vibes, you’re able to relax just a little bit more easily than you do at home.
So, what’s the secret to creating this feeling? If you look closely, you’ll likely see that it’s not pristine, super fussy furnishings or décor.
By nature, resort and Airbnb furnishing tend to functional, as they literally have to withstand hundreds of guests per year.
The trick to these rooms is that they are clean and uncluttered, yet not sterile. They’re also well put together and staged to be cozy and comfortable.
Here are step-step directions to make your own bedroom feel like you’re on vacation in less than an hour.
30-Minute Declutter
Set a time for 30 minutes and start decluttering the surfaces of your room.
This means:
- Put dirty clothes in the hamper and hang up/put away anything that is clean
- Clear off your dresser, bookshelf, nightstand – anything that has a counter.
- Throw away garbage, put away books you aren’t reading, corral your jewelry, etc.
This does not mean:
- Taking the time to put new organization systems into place.
- Attempting to detangle the necklaces that got mixed together on your nightstand.
- Finishing any projects you’ve got lying around or sorting through paperwork.
Right now, you’re going for the quick win and trying to create a cozy, uncluttered, clear space. Organizing can wait for another time!
Dust and Vaccum Your Room
Set a timer for 10 minutes – now dust all of the surfaces and as much of your decor as you have time for. Be sure to leave a few minutes to vacuum the carpet/rug (or sweep if you have hardwood floors).
Make Your Bed
Set a timer for 5 minutes and make your bed.
If it takes you a little bit longer than 5 minutes to make your bed, that’s okay. If it takes a lot longer, you probably need to downsize the number of pillows and quilts you’re using.

Thoughtfully Rearrange a Few Items
Could the planter on your dresser look better on your bookshelf on the other side of the room? Would the framed photo on the bookshelf be a nice addition to your nightstand?
Take a few moments to give your room an entirely new look and feel by rearranging items that you can move around easily.
Think About How You’d Like to Use or Improve Your Bedroom
While you’re cleaning and decluttering your room, think about the way you currently use your room or would like to use it.
Are there changes you could make to make it more functional? Are there ways it could be better organized, cozier, or make it feel more like a relaxing spot you can’t wait to return to at the end of the day?
Make a mental note of these things so you can make a few changes when you have time.
Diffuse an Essential Oil or Light a Candle
Once you’ve got the room cleaned, decluttered, and strategically moved a few items around, it’s time to add a fresh scent.
If you’re into candles, light one with a relaxing, pleasant scent. The easiest way to transform your room using scents is by diffusing essential oils. (This ceramic & wood ultrasonic diffuser doubles as a pretty piece of decor.
These are some of the best essential oils for making your bedroom smell fresh and give off relaxing vibes at the same time:
- Lavender
- Ylang Ylang
- Bergamot
- Lemon
- Orange
- Sage
- Sandalwood
Take a Few Minutes to Order an Item or Two
While you were cleaning your bedroom and putting things away, did you take a few moments to think about how you could improve the space? If so, while it’s fresh in your mind, take a few moments to go online and order a few items that would make an impact on the level of enjoyment you get when you’re in your bedroom.
This isn’t necessarily the time to order new furniture or make any big decisions, but rather to address some of the small issues you found.
For example, do you pile your clothes on a chair because you don’t have enough hangers – then order a package of hangers. Or, do you need new bed pillows because yours have gone flat or a jewelry organizer to corral your necklaces? Go ahead and buy a few items that you know will make a big difference in how you’re able to best use your space.
Relax and Enjoy the Space
How that your bedroom is cleaner, cozier, and has an “I’m relaxing on vacation” feel, it’s time to enjoy your space.
Grab a mug of coffee, tea, or glass of wine and sit and unwind for a few moments, just taking in your cozy bedroom. If you have time, grab a book, journal, or magazine and have some me-time.
Bonus – when it’s time for bed, you’ll be able to climb into your already made, cozy bed in a room filled with a relaxing scent. And, in the morning, you’ll wake up feeling you’re on your own private getaway.
